The annual Miss Universe Philippines Contest has been a long-held contest of beauty and brains among the women in our country. Whoever wins the coveted prize will then move on to the international contest to have a chance to win the Miss Universe crown. In Miss Universe history, the Philippines has won the pageant four times. Gloria Diaz first won it in 1969 alongside the Apollo 11 moon landing; this was seen as two historic events happening at once, the first man on the moon and the first Filipina Miss Universe. Margie Moran then won it again in 1973. She is now an advocate for peace in Mindanao and the chair of the Cultural Center of the Philippines. A long fourty-two years later, Pia Wurtzbach won the contest in a controversial announcement when the host, Steve Harvey, mistakenly announced Miss Colombia as the winner. Finally, and most recently, Catriona Gray won in 2018. She is also the first Filipina to win both Miss Universe Philippines and Miss World Philippines.
Beatrice Luigi Gomez’ win
When the search for our next Miss Universe representative began again, the organization in charge fielded a hundred contestants, who already previously went through screening, to narrow their list down to the 30 contestants that will participate in the live events. During this time, former PBB contestant Kisses Delavin was a heavy favorite among the fans of the contest and she was also featured on talk shows to promote her run.
When coronation night arrived, the finalists went through several contests similar to the featured events in its international counterpart. Beatrice Luigi Gomez, the reigning Binibining Cebu winner who won back in January of 2020, stood out among the others in various contests. With no surprise, she won the biggest title of the night. But she wasn’t the only winner of the event. Maureen Wroblewitz of Pangasinan and Steffi Aberasturi of Cebu were the 1st and 2nd runner-ups respectively, while Katrina Dimaranan of Taguig won Miss Universe Tourism and Victoria Vincent won Miss Universe Charity as well.
Who is Beatrice Luigi Gomez?
Beatrice Luigi Gomez is the first bisexual, and member of the LGBTQ+ community, to win the Miss Universe Philippines title. She is also an athlete, navy reservist, and an LGBTQ+ rights advocate, and is currently in a happy relationship with her girlfriend. In an Instagram post, she described herself as “Sometimes I'm Beatrice/Bea, other days I feel like being Luigi. It's about being feminine and masculine at the same time." She hopes that in the future, the young members of the LGBTQ+ community are no longer bullied and discriminated against for who they are. She will be competing as the Philippines’ official bet to win the 2021 Miss Universe Pageant to be held in Israel this December.
